The not so Great Dane

So I’m writing the latest update after another – hopefully small – set back following a party with friends over the weekend: 16 adults, 9 toddlers/babies, an open-fire BBQ in the pouring rain. What could possibly go wrong?

Not the obvious, as it turns out.

Having survived the main party totally unscathed, all sensible parties had gone home by mid evening, leaving us, our hosts and another family to continue proceedings (we were all staying overnight, so not entirely unexpected).

All bar one of the children were in bed by 10.30pm leaving the adults to continue the festivities. Some alcohol may have been consumed. Some dancing may have occurred. But it wasn’t the alcohol or the dancing that directly caused the problem.

Oh no, instead, in a fit of excitement at a particularly energetic bout of dancing from one of the party, our host’s Great Dane jumped up from the sofa to join in, ran straight at me, hitting my leg and shoving my knee backwards as I was standing on it (you guessed it, hyperextension).

It was a bit sore initially but quickly settled down and the next day there was no swelling or anything to worry about so all carried on as normal.

Yesterday, I headed off to the gym in the evening for a run but after 10 minutes of run:walk (it’s a slog at the moment, hence the run:walk just to get something done), I began to feel twinges in the knee. The twinges kept happening over the next 10 minutes but I wanted to push on to 30 minutes so kept going until sharper shooting pains through my knee made me stop altogether.

It has been a bit uncomfortable overnight but I can’t see any swelling (unless it’s at the back, where I can’t see it) and it’s fine for walking so hopeful it has just been jarred and a few days taking it easy will see me right again.

Fingers crossed!
